Find your division,
find your night

Each division runs on designated game days. Rank them in order of preference when you register — for example, a Division 2 team that wants Fridays enters “1. Fridays, 2. Sundays, 3. Mondays.”

Placement is not guaranteed. You can request a division at registration, but league management may move teams before the season starts — or during it, using the first six regular season games as an evaluation window. Placement decisions consider roster strength, past performance, and overall competitive balance.
Two numbers, both must be met. The old limits on how many higher-division players you could carry are gone. Each division now has a Player ceiling — the highest rating eligible for that division — and a Team cap on the roster as a whole. A roster has to satisfy both. Player ceilings are set below; team cap figures are published before the October 25 deadline.

A roster cap
is coming

Counting players from higher divisions tells us how many strong players a team has, but not how strong they are. A cap system measures the roster as a whole, so divisions stay competitive from the first game to the last.

Player ceilings are confirmed and listed with each division above. Team cap figures follow before the October 25 deadline. Nothing changes for Division 1, which stays open with no ceiling and no cap.

The details

League information

Game format
  • Three 10-minute stopped-time periods, scheduled in one-hour slots.
  • 5-on-5, with 3-on-3 overtime in the regular season (five minutes run-time). Games never end in a tie.
  • Men's divisions play an 18-game regular season. Women's and Co-ed divisions play a 12-game regular season.
  • Playoffs use 5-on-5 overtime (five minutes stopped time) followed by a shootout. Championship games 2 and 3 go to continuous overtime.
  • Penalties are called per the official Ballhockey.com Rule Book, available under the Resources tab.
  • Playoffs guarantee two games per team, with up to three games per round in a best-of-three series.
Team requirements
  • Roster minimum 11 players, maximum 20, including at least one goaltender. Division 1 rosters max out at 22 including the goaltender.
  • Teams supply their own jerseys or t-shirts. All jerseys must be the same colour and every player needs a number on the back. Division 1 teams require full uniforms.
  • Captains submit and manage rosters online, but every player must sign the team waiver in the clubhouse before their first game. Each rink keeps a waiver binder with a page per team. Players sign once, at any location.
  • Players who haven't signed are illegal players, and any game they play in becomes a forfeit loss.
  • Players must play a minimum of three games to qualify for playoffs.
  • Rosters lock on December 31, 2026. League management may restrict or regulate rosters at any point in the season based on team strength and competitive balance, and may re-place teams in a different division before or after the roster deadline.
Scheduling
  • Each division has allocated game days — rank your preference at registration.
  • Teams play one to two games per week.
  • Weeknight games run between 6:30pm and 11:30pm. Weekend games run between 12pm and 11:00pm.
  • Rescheduling is reserved strictly for emergencies — extreme weather, power outages, or staff illness where last-minute coverage isn't possible. Fielding a team for a scheduled game is the responsibility of the team rep and players; failure to do so is a forfeit.
Payment
  • All payments go through the team captain. The league does not track what individual players pay — the captain is responsible for the team's balance.
  • $500 is due before the team's first regular season game, following the instalment schedule above.
  • Teams must be paid in full by the twelfth regular season game. An outstanding balance after that point puts the team at risk of forfeits until it's cleared, plus further disciplinary action if needed.
  • Captains can assign payments to players through the online portal.
  • Please manage your roster and payments through the portal — add players before the season starts and keep payments current.
The three-season calendar

Adult leagues run on three seasons a year rather than four, which means less resetting and more time competing:

  • Spring — March to June
  • Summer — July to October
  • Fall/Winter — November to February
Common questions

FAQ

How do I know which division to enter?

Request one at registration. League management may move teams before the season starts, or during it, using the first six regular season games as an evaluation window. Placement considers roster strength, past performance, and overall competitive balance.

Can we choose which night we play?

You rank your division's game days in order of preference when you register. We schedule to those preferences wherever possible, but a specific night can't be guaranteed.

Where are games played?

Games run at both the Canal Rinks and Haig Bowl Arena. Your schedule will show the location for each game.

What's my player rating, and where do I check it?

Ratings determine whether a player fits under a division's ceiling. A dedicated ratings document and a searchable lookup site — where you can check a rating and calculate your team's total — are coming ahead of the season.

Where can I find the rules?

The full Ballhockey.com Official Rule Book is available online and covers rosters, equipment, penalties, playing rules, playoffs, overtime, Co-ed rules, and suspensions.

One note: roster limits, the payment schedule, and the division restrictions in Section Eight are being updated for Fall/Winter 2026. Where the current rule book and this page differ on those three, this page is correct. Everything else in the rule book stands.

Who's responsible for paying — me or my players?

The team fee is the sole responsibility of the team rep. Captains can assign payments to players through the online portal, but the league does not track what individual players have paid — we deal with the team's balance only.

Can we get a refund if we withdraw?

No. Payments made toward a season are non-refundable. Once a payment is made it stays with that season.

Does our goalie count toward the roster maximum?

Yes — goaltenders count toward your roster maximum. Whether your goalie contributes to the team fee is entirely up to the team rep, since the fee is the rep's responsibility to collect and pay.

Can we add players during the season?

Yes, up until the roster deadline of December 31, 2026. Keep in mind a player must appear in at least three regular season games to be eligible for playoffs.

We're short players for a game — what are our options?

If you have fewer than seven players including a goaltender, you may pick up a maximum of two spares, provided your total doesn't exceed seven participants for that game. Spares must be registered participants in the current season and are regular season only. If you have no goaltender, you can pick up a spare goalie regardless of division. Co-ed teams must use female spares, except for a spare goaltender.

What happens if we can't field a team at all?

The game is a forfeit. Give league management at least 48 hours' notice — a forfeit without notice and without confirmation from league staff carries a $75 team fine, and outstanding fines must be cleared before playoffs. Letting your opponent know is a courtesy; they can take the win and use the hour to practise.

Do games go ahead in bad weather?

Games are played in virtually any weather. Only league management can delay, cancel, or postpone a game, and only for extreme cold, electrical activity, or severe storms. Your team rep will pass along any cancellation.

How do the Co-ed rules work?

Each team must have at least two female players on the floor at all times — a female goaltender doesn't count toward that requirement. A maximum of three goals scored by male players count per game; beyond that the goal isn't added and the following face-off goes to the opposing end. If a Co-ed game is tied after regulation, the male goal limit is removed.
